Three Wheeled Buggies
If you're seeking a buggy to run with or just a compact stroller for neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design allows them to be maneuvered easily even in tight areas.
If you are looking for an easy ride in your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. They are susceptible, however to punctures. Be prepared with an emergency repair kit.
Sturdy frame

New data show that three-wheeled buggies, that symbol of the decade that had more money than common sense, are in rapid decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers that are able to handle a wider range of terrain, while also looking elegant and easy to push.
The larger the wheels are, the better your buggy can deal with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back also makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on rough terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn and a 3 year old and found it was able to withstand grass, cobbles, rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it feels sturdy to push and very solid when you're on rough terrain. The tyres, which are inflatable and need to be pumped up regularly they have suspension built-in. This was extremely comfortable for my kids.
Another thing to think about is the size of the seat and shape. You want the seat to be big enough for your child to be comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of reclining completely, while others will only allow the parent to be facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or wet walks. This buggy is suitable for a single child from birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers until age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat. Storage options are also great with a large storage basket with zip pockets on the hood, and an extra pouch at the rear of seat unit.
Wheels with a larger diameter
Larger wheels means that your buggy will have more stability on rough terrain - ideal for off-road buggies. They also help you maneuver the buggy through tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have swivel wheels on the front, which assist you in navigating tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is especially useful when you crash into trees or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to avoid hitting it.
A lot of 3 wheeled pushchairs come with air-filled tyres that allow them to navigate a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They are also lighter. They are also more susceptible to punctures, so you will require a repair kit and spare inner tubes on hand.
Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to easily move up and down kerbs. They also come with a suspension system that in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".
The downside of having larger wheels is that they make buggies quite large and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This is an issue if you plan to use it as a jogger or you need to get through doorways that are narrow while out and about. Fortunately, many models come with compact folding options that allow you to take off the front wheels for more compact storage.
Easy to maneuver
One of the major advantages of a three-wheel buggy is that it is much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in tow. The way they are constructed means that the front wheels rotate at a whim and are really easy to maneuver and are ideal for difficult terrain like cobbles, parks, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she said: "The Terrain is a pleasure to drive on rough terrain. The front swivel wheel was especially useful." I was also awed by the way it handled kerbs, especially when using the brake operated by hand. I found it to be extremely stable when going downhill or over uneven ground."
The only drawback to this incredible mobility is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels do sometimes mean that it will struggle in tight spaces - something to consider if you live in a metropolitan area. If this is an issue then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better option for you.
